The Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI) aims to improve the work on ontology alignment (or matching), which is fundamental for semantic data integration. Every year since 2004, a competition organized by OAEI takes place where state of the art ontology matching systems compete. The systems are compared in terms of precision, recall, and F-measure. In 2009 AgrementMaker ranked high among its peers.

In 2010, the ADVIS Lab directed by Professor Isabel Cruz has obtained first place (among nine systems) in the anatomy track with the AgreementMaker system for ontology matching. The team also included Cosmin Stroe, Michele Caci, Federico Caimi, Matteo Palmonari, Flavio Palandri Antonelli, and Ulas Keles.

The anatomy track challenge resides in automatically finding mappings between two ontologies describing the mouse adult anatomy published by the Mouse Gene Expression Database Project (2744 classes) and the human anatomy published by the National Cancer Institute (3304 classes). In addition to this remarkable performance, AgreementMaker also participated successfully in two other tracks: benchmarks and conference.

The ADVIS Lab has currently a couple dozen partners that use the AgreementMaker system in a variety of domains. One of our partners (since 2009) is the XLDB Research Team at LASIGE (University of Lisbon). PhD student Cátia Pesquita and Professor Francisco Couto have participated in the anatomy track for the first time in 2010 and were ranked fifth with their BLOOMS system, which extends AgreementMaker with their own matching algorithms.
