Entrance Requirements

Incoming first-year students students seeking admission to the College of Engineering who are recent high school graduates or who have earned less than 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of credit at another collegiate institution are classified as new freshman and must meet the entrance requirements to the college that are specified for new freshmen. The College of Engineering recommends that each new freshman complete a strong high school mathmatics curriculum that includes algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Admission priority is given to Illinois residents. Applicants who are not Illinois residents may be admitted only after review by the college.

As a new freshman applicant you must:

• Be a graduate of an accredited high school or submit passing scores on the General Educational Development Test (GED)
• Complete the American College Test (ACT) or the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or Scholastic Assessment Test I(SAT-I)
• Present a satisfactory combination of class rank and test scores
• Satisfy the high school subject pattern requirements listed below

High School Subject Patterns for Beginning Freshmen ⁽¹⁾

These subjects help insure that the beginning freshman is best prepared to enroll in required courses. A unit represents a high-school-level course covering an academic year. Students who do not meet these course pattern requirements but meet all other requirements will have their applications reviewed. ⁽²⁾

⁽¹⁾ These subject pattern requirements are in compliance with Public Act 86-0954, which defines the minimum high school requirements for admission to public colleges and universities in Illinois.

⁽²⁾ GED Scores do not satisfy these requirements. GED graduates should also submit transcripts for any high school studies completed.

⁽³⁾ ESL courses that appear on high school transcripts will be accepted as regular or college prep courses only if the high school identifies ESL courses as equivalent to regular high school English courses. Applicants whose ESL courses are not considered by their high schools to be equivalent to regular English courses will have their applications reviewed by the college of their choice provided they present the minimum acceptable test scores and class rank.

⁽⁴⁾ One unit must be American history plus one unit of history,government, psychology, economics or geography.

⁽⁵⁾ Foreign language, music vocational education, and/or art.

⁽⁶⁾ Additional English, math, laboratory science, social studies, foreign language, music, and/or art.

Transfer students

1) Transfer, readmit, and second bachelor’s degree applicants may apply for Fall or Spring; 2) Non-degree applicants are not accepted.

Requirements: 1)Transfer applicants are encouraged to complete 60 semester (90 quarter) hours of transferable work at the time of enrollment and are advised to complete the equivalents to UIC courses Math 180, 181, 210, 220, English 160, 161, Physics 141, 142 and Chemistry 112; 2) Computer Science majors should have 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of lab science, which includes an 8 hour sequence; 3) Exceptions to the recommended semester hours and courses can apply for transfers from ABET-EAC/CAC accredited programs. Financial aid

The UIC Office of Student Financial Aid provides information on scholarships, fellowships, loans, and student work-study opportunities for both incoming and continuing students. The College of Engineering also offers special scholarships restricted to Engineering students.

Scholarships

Many scholarships and awards are available through the College of Engineering Scholarship Program. Students can apply to the majority of these engineering scholarships by completing a single application available from 123 SEO.

In addition, students may contact the College department offices, the UIC Scholarship Association and the Office of Special Scholarship Programs at UIC for information on additional scholarships.

In order to qualify to apply for Engineering Scholarships, students need to meet the following requirements:

• Students must be admitted to the College of Engineering
• Qualified beginning freshmen students will be selected for Fall term scholarships, no application required
• Students must have completed at least 30 semester hours of coursework of which 13 semester hours must be at UIC
• Students must have an earned grade point average of at least 3.00 (A=4.00)

Special programs

Guaranteed Professional Program Admissions

For engineers, the Guaranteed Professional Program Admissions initiative allows a limited number of highly-qualified first-year students to be admitted to UIC with guaranteed admission to a PhD program in engineering, providing they meet college coursework and performance criteria.

Honors College

After they have been admitted to UIC, all incoming freshmen with an ACT composite score of at least 28 or an SAT total score of 1240, and who rank in the top 15 percent of their high school class, are invited to join the Honors College (membership is not automatic; students must submit an application).

Honors College students enjoy access to honors classes and seminars, an Honors College Fellow, undergraduate research opportunities, special scholarships, extended library privileges, and Access to Honors College facilities (computer lab, lounge, quiet study room, etc.).

Housing

UIC offers on-campus housing for undergraduate and graduate students. Housing information and applications are available through the UIC Campus Housing.

Student organizations

Undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in a broad array of student activities and organizations. Visit the UIC Campus Programs site to see the many activities that UIC offers. The Student organizations resource home page describes campus-wide organizations. In addition, the College of Engineering sponsors a wide range of student activities, organizations and chapters.
