ABET Accreditation

The Computer Science department's BS program has been accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET (and its predecessors) since 1997.

ABET, Inc., the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology, is a federation of 28 professional and technical societies representing these fields. Among the most respected accreditation organizations in the U.S., ABET has provided leadership and quality assurance in higher education for over 75 years. http://www.abet.org/

The Objectives of the Computer Science B.S. Program are as follows:

  1. Depth: To provide students with understanding of the fundamental knowledge prerequisite for the practice of, or for advanced study in computer science, including its scientific principles, rigorous analysis, and effective design.
  2. Breadth: To provide students with the broad education, including knowledge of important current issues in computer science, necessary for productive careers in the public or private sectors, or for the pursuit of graduate education.
  3. Professionalism: To develop skills for clear communication and responsible teamwork, and to instill professional attitudes and ethics, so that students are prepared for the complex modern work environment.
  4. Learning Environment: To provide an environment that enables students to pursue their goals in an innovative program that is rigorous and challenging, open and supportive.
The Outcomes of the Computer Science B.S. Program are as follows:

  • (a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics and computer science
  • (c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.
  • (d) an ability to function on teams
  • (e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve technical problems
  • (f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  • (g) an ability to communicate effectively
  • (k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and tools necessary for computer science practice.
These outcomes are based on the list provided by ABET for Engineering Programs. This list was modified to reflect a computer science bias and to those outcomes that are specifically addressed in courses taught by the Computer Science Department.
