Combined Driving Events
Combined Driving is the driven equivelent of combined training. The horse(s) compete in three phases-- Driven Dressage, Marathon, and Obstacle Driving (Cones).
Similar to Combined Training, Combined Driving has both Trials and Events. Trials take place on one day, with only section E, the obstacle section, of the Marathon being included. Events are either two day or three day, with either three section or five section marathons, depending on level.
The following are the levels of Combined Driving:
Training: This level is suitable to novice drivers and green horses. A training level dressage test given for the driven dressage phase. The marathon may be from four to ten kilometers. Up to three sections (A, D, E) may be included. Up to five obstacles, with three gates (parts) to each, may be included in section E. Obstacles in section E are not timed individually and there are no time penalities given for time spent in the obstacles. The minimum clearence for the cones in obstacle driving is 40cm. In Multiple horse teams, there may be no water, bridge, or zig zag obstacles in obstacle driving.
Preliminary: This level is suitable for horses and drivers in regular training. A preliminary level dressage test given for the driven dressage phase. The marathon may be from eight to sixteen kilometers. Three sections (A, D, E) are included in the marathon. Up to six obstacles, with up to five gates (parts) to each, may be included in section E. The minimum clearence for the cones in obstacle driving is 35cm.
Intermediate: This level is suitable for horses with speed, boldness, and conditioning. An intermediate level dressage test given for the driven dressage phase. The marathon may be from twelve to twenty kilometers. Either three sections (A, D, E), or five sections (A, B, C, D, E) are included in the marathon. Six to eight obstacles, with up to six gates (parts) to each, may be included in section E. The minimum clearence for the cones in obstacle driving is 30cm.
Advanced: This is international level of competition, and should only be attempted by horses with the ability and stamina to handle it. An advanced level dressage test given for the driven dressage phase. The marathon may be from up to twenty-two kilometers. Five sections (A, B, C, D, E) are included in the marathon. Six to eight obstacles, with up to six gates (parts) to each, may be included in section E. Routes are set at the minimum width. The minimum clearence for the cones in obstacle driving is 20cm for singles, and 30cm for teams.
