Combination






The Combination, often called ride and drive classes, require for the horse to be shown in harness, and immediately after be shown undersaddle. Typically the horse is judged 50% for the driving part, and 50% for the riding part, although some classes, such as Combination Hunter, do differ. The following are the combination classes recognized by the CDS.


Ride and Drive: A Carriage Pleasure class. The horse is first shown in harness and asked to demonstrate walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot, and immediately following is shown undersaddle at a walk, trot, and canter. The horse must stand quietly and rein back both in harness and undersaddle. Any tack may be used to show undersaddle, and any suitable pleasure vehicle may be used for the driving section. Judged 50% on performance, manners, way of going and suitability in harness; 50% on performance, manners, and way of going under saddle.

Combination Hunter: The horse is required to show in harness at a walk, slow trot, working trot, and strong trot; under saddle at a walk, trot, canter, and hand gallop; and over fences over a small course of no more than four jumps, 2'-2'6 for ponies, 2'6-3' for horses. The horse must stand quietly and rein back both in harness and undersaddle. Additional tests, such as mounting, dismounting, or opening a gate, may be called for in the Under Saddle portion at the judges disgression. Judged 40% on performance, manners, way of going and suitability in harness; 30% on performance, manners and way of going under saddle; 30% on hunting performance over fences.

Sporting Tandem: As the name implies, this class is for tandem hitch teams. The team must be shown in a suitable tandem vehicle, with the lead horse wearing a hunting saddle, hunting bridle, and breast collar. The team is show in harness both ways of the ring at a walk, slow trot, working trot, and strong trot. While the wheel horse trots, the lead horse is permitted to canter. Following the harness portion, the lead horse is shown undersaddle both ways of the ring at a walk, trot, canter, and hand gallop. The team must stand quietly and rein back, and the lead horse must stand quietly and rein back undersaddle. In the harness portion, the judge may call individual entrants to perform figure-eights or other suitable tests. Under saddle, horses may be required to jump two fences. Judged 60% on performance, manners and way of going in harness; 40% on performance, manners and way of going under saddle.

Formal Combination: The horse is first asked to show in Formal Park Driving, demonstrating park walk, park trot, and "show your horse." Following the harness section the horse is then shown Park Saddle, and asked to demonstrate park walk, park trot, and canter. Saddle seat tack and formal attire is require. Judged 50% on harness portion and 50% on under saddle portion.

Informal Combination: The horse is first asked to show in English Pleasure Driving, demonstrating walk, trot, and "show your horse." Following the harness section the horse is then shown English Pleasure under saddle and asked to show walk, trot, and canter. Saddle seat tack and informal attire is require. Judged 50% on harness portion and 50% on under saddle portion.

Country Pleasure Combination: The horse is first asked to show in Country Pleasure Driving, demonstrating walk, trot, and "show your horse." Following the harness section the horse is then shown Country Pleasure under saddle and asked to demonstrate walk, trot, and canter. Saddle seat tack and informal attire is require. Judged 50% on harness portion and 50% on under saddle portion.

Classic Pleasure Combination: The horse is first asked to show in Classic Pleasure Driving, demonstrating walk, pleasure trot, and road trot. Following the harness section the horse is then shown Classic Pleasure under saddle and asked to demonstrate walk, pleasure trot, and canter. Saddle seat tack and informal attire is require. Judged 50% on harness portion and 50% on under saddle portion.
