Gzip for Solaris large files
There is a right version of gzip and a wrong one. You can run gzip -V or
gzip --version to find the version you have.
-
The right version is 1.3, compiled with large file support.
-
The wrong version (which is still around in many places) is 1.2.4.
The wrong version will not properly compress large files, such as we produce
when we backup a whole machine. Be sure to check all the versions in your path.
If you need to obtain a correct one, it is on piemonte in /usr/local/bin.
