Fall 2009 students on CS-109
We asked a few students on how to do good in this course ...
Well what always worked for me was to try doing the homework assignments right away, to at least get the thinking process started. I tend to learn by actually doing the work, so for me the discussion sessions i had with you was what actually helped me learn so keep doing what you did last semester. As far as studying is concern, im not really sure how you can actually study for this course, but i guess the best way to study is to actually know what each thing is like what a for loop is an its functions in order to be able to apply it any test program question that might be asked.
HW: I know it sounds counter productive, but I liked to start on the homework before I had been taught all of the skills necessary to complete it. Trying to work through the issues by myself first made me understand the solutions better when I heard them in class. I always found that the lectures made more sense when I had an idea of how/why certain topics where used/taught.
Exams: Assuming Professor Bell is keeping the same policy, the one-page "crib sheet" that he allows is a great thing. Not because you can bring info into the test (although that helps), but because it really helps you determine what topics you know well and which ones you don't. I always started studying by first deciding what was going to go on the sheet. By sorting through all of the topics, I was able to get a good sense of what I needed to study more, and what topics I could get away with not focusing on.
