The course and its objectives

This is a special topics graduate course, which will be run like a seminar. See the list of resources and topics for an overview of the subject matter of the course.

The course aims to prepare students to undertake research in the important subjects that comprise the new Semantic Web research area. Subjects will be introduced by the instructor and by the students in their presentations to the class. The project will be representative of current research and development in the Semantic Web area. Because of the research nature of the course, it is best suited for advanced graduate students.

Recommended background

An advanced undergraduate course or a graduate course (or equivalent experience) in two or more of the following areas:

Students can develop work in the course along their main interest area(s), if they so wish. However, the material they produce has to be specific to the subject of the course and developed specifically for the course.

Readings

See an initial list of papers and books. The readings and the ability to discuss the research material in them is one of the essential parts of the course.

Evaluation

There will be a final project on an agreed topic between professor and students. There will also be a presentation in class on a topic agreed between professor and students. Group projects and presentations are encouraged (2-3 students). Class participation is essential and is graded. There may be one or more user studies.

Detail (out of 100%):

20%: Careful organization and design of slides
40%: Appropriate coverage of the material (at least one paper covered in depth) and 1-3 more papers covered in less detail, but complementing the ``main paper''
20%: Delivery of the presentation (professional and well rehearsed)
20%: Ability to answer questions from the audience
Project Proposal (deliverable: presentation and 5 PPT slides) Total: 10%
