The “Bees Waggle Dance” is a computer-supported collaborative activity that allows middle-school students to explore the phenomenon of the bee waggle dance while applying the scientific method. Students are immersed in a classroom-sized interactive simulation comprised of a virtual hive that displays a dancing bee whose waggle pattern dynamically changes to reflect the configuration of the relevant elements in the classroom. Our design aims at creating an environment where students can record their observations and conduct experiments to verify their hypotheses.
So far we have developed a proof of concept that highlights our design and the interactions that are likely to happen as a result of this activity. In the upcoming months, we will test this design in a local school and analyze its effectiveness and impact. Stay tuned!
