Application of computer science theory and alorithms to problems from artificial intelligence, especially machine learning ("computational learning theory") and knowledge representation.
Computer security, especially access control.
Computer Science Education.

NSF Theory of Computing Program

From January 2001 through August 2002 I was on loan from UIC to the National Science Foundation, serving as the Program Director for Theory of Computing. At NSF, the Theory of Computing program was in the Division of Computer-Communications Research in the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE).

Since that time, CISE has reorganized, and changed the name of the relevant division to Computer-Communication Fundamentals, and kind of sort of abolished individual programs in favor of "clusters" of programs/areas.

In 2007, I wrote this article for the March 2007 issue of SIGACT News about my time at NSF.
