Dr. Barbara Di Eugenio is the PI on the project "Extending and Validating a Computational Theory of Effective Tutoring", which recently obtained funding from the Office of Naval Research ($345,309 for two years). The project is an interdisciplinary collaboration with Dr. Stellan Ohlsson (Psychology, UIC). It furthers a line of research the NLP laboratory has been pursuing for a few years: we investigate why one-on-one tutoring dialogues are so effective for student learning, and we embody our findings in language interfaces to Intelligent Tutoring Systems, software systems that support students' learning. Our current domain is basic data structures and algorithms in CS.
