Abstract:

This talk presents the MOMIS (Mediator Environment for Multiple Information Sources) system, a data integration system based on a mediator architecture, developed by the DBGROUP of the University of Modena & Reggio Emilia, Italy. MOMIS is a framework to perform information extraction and integration from both structured and semistructured data sources. An object-oriented language, with an underlying Description Logic, called ODL-I3, derived from the standard ODMG is introduced for information extraction. Information integration is then performed in a semi-automatic way, by exploiting semantic annotation of data sources and ODL-I3 descriptions of source schemas with a combination of clustering techniques and Description Logics. This integration process gives rise to a virtual integrated view of the underlying sources (the Global Schema) for which mapping rules and integrity constraints are specified to handle heterogeneity. The MOMIS system, based on a wrapper/mediator architecture, provides methods and open tools for data management in Internet-based information systems by using a CORBA-2 interface. MOMIS development started within the INTERDATA and the D2I Italian national research project in 1999. This research activity continued within the IST project " "SEWASIE: Semantic Webs and Agents in Integrated Economies" (2002/2005). MOMIS will be used and extended within the MUR "NeP4B: Networked Peers for Business" project (2006/2009) and the IST-EU RDT project "STASIS (SofTware for Ambient Semantic Interoperable Services)" (2006-2009). During the talk, a demo of MOMIS and of its planned extensions to support data and services integration within the NeP4B project will be presented.



Brief Bio:

Sonia Bergamaschi is full professor of Computer Engineering in the Engineering Faculty and dean of the International Doctorate School in ICT at the university of Modena & Reggio Emilia. She leads the database research group, at the Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione ( www.dbgroup.unimo.it). Her research activity has been mainly devoted to knowledge representation and management in the context of very large databases facing both theoretical and implementation aspects. Since 1985, she has been very active in the area of coupling artificial intelligence (Description Logics) and database techniques to develop Intelligent Database Systems. Since 2002, her research activities have been extended to the Semantic Web. Her research efforts have been devoted to the Intelligent Information Integration (I3) topic, and in particular to MOMIS.

She is responsible for the IST european project "STASIS" and national coordinator of the MUR FIRB project "NeP4B", whose goal is the development of a network, based on a P2P architecture, for exchanging and sharing knowledge among Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). Previously she was coordinator of the Intelligent Information Agents group of the European network of excellence AgentLinkII. She also coordinated the IST European Research project "SEWASIE", whose aim was to develop a semantic search engine, and participated in the IST European Research project "WINK".

She published more than one hundred international journal and conference papers and her research has been funded by the Italian MURST, CNR, ASI institutions and by European Community projects. She has served on the committees of international and national database and AI conferences (SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, IJCAI, KR, ER, OODBASE, ACM TODS, ACM TOIS, Information Systems) and she was co-chair in several workshops and conferences (DBISP2P, AP2PC, SWAE). She is a member of IEEE and ACM.
