Abstract:

Two weeks ago, Dr. Solworth claimed that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert at a complex topic. If this is true, then where should we apply the 10,000 hours? While it may be surprising to a student, homework and class projects provide only a foundation. ?Internships help, but here the time spent is limited. To break out, a new programmer needs more. I will be discussing how to leverage Open Source to participate in real-world projects on your own time. ?Get serious: become an expert.
