February 27, 2015: CS associate professor Tanya Berger-Wolf on WBEZ's Worldview: Counting and naming animals

What if you could count and name every individual large animal in the world? That?s a dream of Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf. She?s a computational ecologist and computer scientist at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Berger-Wolf will lead a team of UIC researchers to the Nairobi National Park in Kenya to gather data in hopes of individually counting and identifying all giraffes and zebras. She joins us to talk about the genesis, scope and purpose of the initiative she co-founded, the Image-Based Ecological Information System (IBEIS).
