Traffic Sensing at BITS Lab

Over time, sensing traffic congestion, travel times, and other transportation phenomena has evolved into one of the primary directions of our lab. Below, we briefly describe ongoing research projects and acknowledge financial support received.

RF re-identification

Modern electronic devices often emit identifiable RF signals. This includes WiFi, Bluetooth, various RFID technologies, tire pressure sensors, step-counting shoes, and more. We work on means of collecting such information, and processing it to produce valuable traffic information. Our paper ``Tracking Unmodified Smartphones Using Wi-Fi Monitors'' in SenSys 2012 pdf is an example of this.

Counting Vehicles, Bicyclists and Pedestrians in video

Existing video resources, in the form of networked surveillance and traffic cameras, offer a potentially very valuable data traffic information source. We are working on robust counting techniques suitable for the grainy, occluded and low-resolution video typically available from these cameras.

GPS trace processing

GPS traces are becoming available in increasingly large numbers, due to collection efforts by device makers, app developers and network providers to capitalize on this valuable data source. We are investigating several methods related to GPS data collection and processing, including efficient online GPS data collection (which we call thrifty tracking), fast and accurate map matching, and map inference from large GPS data collections.

Model-Based Sensor Fusion

Given the availability of sensor data from a range of different data sources, as well as detailed knowledge of the road network, how may these be combined to create a complete view of city traffic? We are investigating model-based approach, where the road map provides a model of feasible movements, which is driven by the inputs given by our various traffic sensors.
