CS 111 - Program Design I


For this assignment, we will combine a few different tasks.
  1. Search the Internet for answers to various questions.
  2. Submit a file for grading to Blackboard that contains the answers and a few other things.

Searching the Internet

According to the show of hands during lecture, most people state they have used the internet to search for information. Many people prefer to use Google at www.google.com to search for information. The key to using any search engine is determining the best keywords to use for your search. Google's Advanced Search at http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en]] is a good place to help narrow down the results from your search.

Lab Assignment 1

Due: Thursday 9/6/2012 by 11:59 pm (i.e. midnight)

Note: the due date for this assignment is Thursday since tthere were no classes on Monday 9/3/2012 due to Labor Day

No late lab assignments are accepted for this class!

This applies to everyone including those who add the class late.

Submit a File for Grading in Blackboard

Create a text file that contains the following information:

  • Your Name
  • Your Net-ID
  • Your UIN
  • The answers to the following questions:
    1. What is the name of the area on the moon were Apollo 11 landed? Include the URL where the answer can be found.

    2. What was the name that the Java Programming Language was initially called? Include the URL where the answer can be found.

    3. What event occurred for a national youth organization on August 21, 1912? Include the URL where the answer can be found.

    4. Who is attributed with making the following quote? "Never trust a computer you can't throw out a window." Include the URL where the answer can be found.
A text file will have a file extension of .txt. There are many programs that will let you create such a file.
  • On a Windows machine, Notepad is one program.
  • On a Linux/UNIX machine, pine is a good program (or vi if pine in not installed).
  • On a MAC machine, TextEdit in such a program.

Submission of your Assignments

Submit this file via the Assignment Link for Lab 1 in Blackboard.
  1. In the CS 111 Web Pages in Blackboard, go to the Assignments Page
  2. Click on the link "Lab 1". This will open a web page with the title: "Upload Assignment: Lab 1"
  3. Scroll down and click on the button "Browse for Local File"
  4. Select the file that you created that contains your name, Net-ID, UIN, and the answers to the above 4 questions. Then click OK
  5. Click the submit button on the "Upload Assignment: Lab 1" page.
  6. You should see the Submission History page that shows what you submitted. Verify you actually submitted the correct information.
