A new "ribbon" interface is in the works for openoffice and I was able to find the link about the development. The news story is a bit out dated, but the prototype was last updated 1-26-2010 (as of this writing) The prototype is interactive and very functional for what it is.

If anyone is interested in graceful display of information, there's a guy doing a lot of interesting work named Hans Rosling. Here's a 20 minute video from the 2006 TED (Technology Engineering Design) Conference. He focuses on visualization of data over time, and ways to elegantly display summarized data while allowing for easy access to tools to expand for more detail.
