0xFF Workshop on Scientific Presentations & Publishing using Latex, Beamer etc.

This coming Friday, Nov 13th, the CSGSA is proud to host Physics PhD student Joel Berger, who will give a talk on "Scientific Presentations & Publishing using Latex, Beamer etc.". The talk is scheduled for the Friendly Friday hour and will begin at 4.00 pm.

This talk should turn out to be useful and enjoyable to a wide range of audiences. Irrespective of whether you are interested in fancy typesetting for your term paper/project report or you are applying some final changes to your thesis document, you will gain something. Be sure to take advantage of this unique opportunity!

The abstract for the talk and a short bio follow.

Abstract. In working with LaTeX these past years I realize that I had to find many of the more interesting things myself. In the spirit of helping others enjoy their LaTeX experience as much as I have I would like to share some of my findings. First I will talk about my toolchain, geared towards new and modern projects. You may have your favorite programs already, but perhaps you are still using the only editor you have ever tried (or viewer, etc.), or the same editor that you use for your other programming. From there I will introduce the Beamer class for making presentations and some simple examples. I will mention the beamerposter package for making, what else, posters. Then finally I will mention the UIC Thesis documentclass for typesetting your thesis here at UIC.

Bio. Joel Berger is has been at UIC since 2002 and since 2005 as a graduate student in the Physics Department. His research concerns Ultrafast Electron Microscopy - using ultrafast lasers to generate the probe electrons in a TEM for sub-ps time resolution in that instrument. He has built experimental columns for testing, and he designs and runs simulations for column optimization. He is also interested in computing, Open Source and LaTeX in particular.
