Undergraduate Open House

The best way to find out more about us is to attend one of our open house gatherings to see our department and meet some of our faculty and staff. These gatherings are targeted towards prospective students who are currently either high school juniors or seniors or are considering transferring from a community college. Parents and friends are also welcome.

Computer Science is one of 6 departments within the College of Engineering, which in turn is one of many colleges that are part of the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC).

  • Does it matter if I'm a transfer student and not a student graduating from high-school?
The Open House information will apply to both categories of entering students. Transfer students should also see the engineering transfer student school guides.
  • What if I'm interested in Computer Science, but I haven't yet taken any Computer Science classes?
We have various starting points in our program, accommodating both students who have never taken computer science courses as well as students who already have an extensive background.
  • What if I'm a high school counselor or teacher and would like to attend?
Though content is geared primarily towards students, participating in an Open House will give you a good perspective on Computer Science in general and our program in particular.
  • What if I'm interested, but can't make any of the above scheduled dates?
Please contact us (see contact information above) to arrange an alternate time.
  • Is there any cost or obligation if I attend an Open House?
No, there is no cost, nor are you obligated in any way. This is simply an opportunity for you to learn more about what it would be like to study CS at UIC.
  • I'm already familiar with the University as a whole. Can I attend only the Computer Science portion of the Open House?
For Computer Science Open House events that are on the same date as university-wide events, we encourage you to attend the university and college portions as well, however you may attend only the Computer Science portion if you are already familiar with the university and the college. If this is the case, please include a comment to this effect when you register.
  • Where can I get information on general UIC campus tours/visits?
    See the web site:
  • I received letters from the Computer Science Department and also from the College of Engineering at UIC. Are they the same thing?
The Computer Science Department is one of six departments within the College of Engineering, which in turn is one of many colleges that are part of the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). If you would like information on the College as a whole, visit their web site at Often the College as a whole has recruiting events of which we in Computer Science are a part, which is why you may receive two different letters.
  • Where can I find more information about the CS undergraduate program at UIC?
The Computer Science undergraduate admissions page has helpful information.
  • What sort of research is being done in Computer Science at UIC?
There is a great variety of research being done, including network security, intelligent tutoring systems, and uses of technology in education. Many open house sessions include a lab tour of the Electronic Visualization Lab (EVL), which has samples of its work on the EVLTube youtube channel.
