Common errors in Web pages |
Are you having trouble accessing your home page, or are
some of the pictures missing?
This is a list of some common errors and possible solutions:
- Check the spelling of your URLs
- "Open dir" error
- Check that your home directory is x ("searchable") by others. You can
do this by typing:
chmod o+x $HOME.
- Check that your WWW directory is x ("searchable") by others. You can
do this by typing:
chmod o+x $HOME/WWW.
- Check that your homepage is in WWW and not www. Case matters in UNIX!
- "Can't be read or doesn't exist" error
- Make sure that your home page is in your WWW directory
- Make sure your home page is in the file Welcome.html, not welcome.html
- Check that your Welcome.html file is r ("readable") by others. You can
do this by typing:
chmod o+x $HOME/WWW/Welcome.html.
- Three dots appear where your image should be
- Make sure that your image files are in your WWW directory, or
a subdirectory of WWW.
- Make sure that all of the subdirectories in your WWW directory are
x ("searchable") by others.
- Make sure the path to your image is specified correctly
- Make sure your image file is r for others
- A question mark appears where your image should be
- Make sure your image file is r for others
