How to scan
- Choose the "user" account, you will then be taken to the "At Ease"
icon menu. There you will find the scanner program called "Ofoto".
Click on that icon.
- Make sure the screen resolution is 72 dpi.
- Put your your item to be scanned in the upper right hand corner of
the scanner. Click the button "Auto Scan". After some time your picture
will appear. Wait for the scanner to finish before doing anything.
- Make sure the dashed rectangle is selected on the tools palette. If
it is not, then click on it to select it.
- Put the crosshair cursor on the scanned image, hold the mouse
button down and move the mouse. A dashed rectangle will appear. This
selected area will become your final image.
- On the menu bar choose "Edit" then choose the menu item "Crop".
Everything outside of the selected area will disappear, and you will be
left with only the part that was selected.
- Your picture could be improved if it looks a little dark. Go to "Image"
on the menu bar and choose "Balance Exposure". This should lighten your picture a bit. If you do not like the results, you can always "Undo" the "Balance
Exposure" from "Edit".
- Go to "File" and choose "Save as...". Make sure it will save to the
"user" folder of "At Ease", give it a name and choose either the "PICT" or
"TIFF" graphic format.
- You should see an icon representing the saved image in the blue "User"
folder. You then need to convert your image to
a GIFF or JPEG format.
How to convert scanned images
- If not already open, go to the "At Ease" icon menu folder and choose the
program "Graphic Converter". Go to "File" on the menu bar and choose the
menu item "Open". Select the name of your image from the dialog box. The
directory setting should be the "user" folder. A small representation of
your
image will appear with information about your image directly underneath
it.
- The amount of colors will be 16.7 mill(32 bits). This will make your
image very large. You need to change this. Go to "Picture" on the menu
bar and go to the menu item "Colors". Move the cursor towards the small
triangle and a submenu will appear. Choose "256 colors(8 bits)".
- Colors on the image information should change to 256 and you should
see an improvement in image quality. It will look sharper.
- Go to "File" on the menu bar and choose "Save as...". Give it a new name
if you like. Change the graphic format by clicking near the word "format"
and while holding down the mouse button move the cursor upwards until
you see "GIF" or "JPG".
- When you let go of the mouse button, your image name should have the
format you chose as the extension. When your done click on the "Save"
button.
- You will find an icon in the "User" folder with your image on it.
- Make sure you close all images when you are finished by clicking the
button found at the left corner of the title bar for your image.
- Next you will need to "Fetch" your image to your account.
How to Fetch (FTP)
- Fetch is the Mac equivalent of ftp.
- You will need to open up the program called "Fetch" (Fig. 1) if it is not
already opened. It will be set to connect to ernie or bert. You need to
type in your login name, hit tab, and then type in your password (Fig. 2). After
you have done this, then hit the return key. If you hit return after
typing in your name, you will get an incorrect password error.
- Your eecs account files will show as a vertical list in the text
field of the fetch window(Fig. 3).
- Choose the directory you would like to put your image in by
double clicking on that directory name. The contents of the new directory
should show in the text field.
- If you are fetching multiple images, go to "Remote" on the menubar.
Choose the menu item "Put Folder". Everything that is in the "user"
folder will show in a scrolled text field. Click on the images you want
to fetch to your eecs account, and press the button "Add". When you are finished, press the button "Done".
- In the "Fetch" window, press the button "Put". This will send your
selected images to your account. You will see those images appear in the
text field that is showing the contents of your account. You will want
to use the file transfer mode of "Raw Data" for your transfer.
- When you have successfully fetched your files, go to "File" on the menu bar and choose "Close".
If you do not your account will be open and
accessible by others.
Common courtesy
- Scanning takes time. Please keep your scans to a minimum if there are
others waiting.
- Images take up a lot of disk space. Please delete your images from the
"User" folder when you are done. Do this
by going to "File" then "Delete". This should be done when the "User"
folder is showing. You will see a scrolled text field. Select the images
you want to delete. Multiple images can be selected by holding down the
open apple key on the lower left of the keyboard and clicking on the
names of the images. When you are finished, press the button "Delete".
A confirmation dialog will appear to confirm the deletion. Push the button
"Delete".
