The following UNIX commands will help you with the lab assignment:
This command will list all of the files and subdirectories in the current directory.
This command will send the contents of a file to a printer. You will need to specify which file and which printer to be used. You can get the filename by using the ls command. Every printer on the system has a name, which at UIC is normally listed on the printer and corresponds to the room number the printer is in. The -P option of the lpr command is used to specify which printer to be used. To print the file hello.cpp to the printer sel2058 the command would be:
lpr -P sel2058 hello.cpp
This command will allow you to create and edit files. The pico editor displays its internal commands at the bottom of the screen which allows it to be easily used. For example to stop using the editor, the internal command is ^X for eXit. The carot symbol "^" before a letter means a control command. ^X is read as Control-X and is performed by holding down the control key (normally marked with the letters Ctrl) and pressing the X key.
This command will display the online manual pages about a command. Type in the command in question after man on the command line. For example to see the information about the ls command type:
man ls
To send and receive email, a good email reader on Icarus is pine. Check out the pine tutorial. The pine mail reader was developed by the same group the developed the pico editor, so you will notice similarities between the two utilities. For other options on email access, check out Chapter 3. UNIX 101: Email and News.
You may turn in the assignment to your TA during lab or place it in his mailbox in 905 SEO. It is suggested that you place it in his mailbox just in case you are unable to attend lab.
Create a file on your UIC icarus account that contains the following information. Print out this file and turn this print out into your TA.
