CS 107 - Lab 1

Icarus UNIX System

We will be using the Icarus UNIX system for the main computer in CS 107 for this semester. Icarus is the primary UIC computer system for students. The ACCC has a web page explaining how to use Icarus and other items.

To send and receive email, a good email reader on Icarus is pine. Check out the pine tutorial. The pine mail reader was developed by the same group the developed the pico editor, so you will notice similarities between the two utilities. For other options on email access, check out Chapter 3. Lab Assignment

Due: By your Lab Time during the second week of the semester (the week of 1/20/2003).

You may turn in the assignment to your TA during lab or place it in his mailbox in 905 SEO. It is suggested that you place it in his mailbox just in case you are unable to attend lab.

Create a file on your UIC icarus account that contains the following information. Print out this file and turn this print out into your TA.

  1. Your name
  2. Your icarus account name (your netid)
  3. Your lab time and day
  4. Your TA's name
  5. The location of the computer lab where your lab will normally be held. Note: this is NOT the room listed in the timetable.
  6. Your major
  7. A favorite joke or quotation.
