Lab 1

For this assignment, we will combine a few different tasks.

Search the Internet for answers to various questions.
Place the answers in an email message.
Send the email to the CS 100 Course Account.

Creation of your Icarus account

During the course of the semester, you will need to use your account on Icarus which is UIC's UNIX machine. To create an account on Icarus, visit the ACCC's Accounts, Machines and Passwords Page. Follow the link "Accounts - Open an ACCC Account Step 3" located under the New Accounts heading.

The Icarus account will be used to store any web pages you wish to make available to the world via the World Wide Web. We will cover some basic commands later in the semester (if you are interested now, you check out the ACCC's Basic UNIX web page).

You should log onto icarus using SSH which stands for Secure SHell. The ACCC has some web page support for SSH. An alternative program to SSH is PuTTY. The added security of these programs is a level of encryption that the traditional telnet program lacks.

Searching the Internet

According to the show of hands during lecture, most people state they have used the internet to search for information. Many people prefer to use Google at www.google.com to search for information.

The key to using any search engine is determining the best keywords to use for your search. Google's Advanced Search at http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en is a good place to help narrow down the results from your search.

Lab Assignment 1

Send an Email to the CS 100 Course Account

Your email must be sent from your UIC account. This can be accessed either through WebMail or pine on icarus.
The email address of the CS 100 Course Account is i100@cs.uic.edu
This email must contain an appropriate subject, such as: CS 100 Lab 1 Email.
The body of the email must contain the answers to the following questions:
1. What are the additive primary colors? Include the URL where the cost can be found.
2. What was the name of the building that will hold the figure skating competitions at the 2006 Winter Olympics? Include the URL where the answer can be found.
3. What river would you be on if you spent the day white water rafting while visiting Cairns Australia? Include the URL where the answer can be found.
4. What is the value of Pi to the 20th decimal place? Include the URL where the answer can be found.
5. What is name of the main character in the series of books written by Bernard Cornwell set during the Napoleonic Wars? Include the URL where the answer can be found.

Do not send your email to Prof. Troy's email address or to any one of the TA's email addresses. You may wish to send a copy of your email to yourself so you know it was sent and so you can have proof that you completed the assignment.
