Lab 1

For this assignment, we will combine a few different tasks.

Search the Internet for answers to various questions.
Place the answers in an email message.
Send the email to the CS 101 Course Account.
Place a message in a Blackboard Discussion Forum.

Searching the Internet

According to the show of hands during lecture, most people state they have used the internet to search for information. Many people prefer to use Google at www.google.com to search for information.

The key to using any search engine is determining the best keywords to use for your search. Google's Advanced Search at http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en is a good place to help narrow down the results from your search.

Lab Assignment 1

Due: Tuesday 1/23/2007 by 11:59 pm (i.e. midnight)

Part 1 - Send an Email to the CS 101 Course Account

Your email must be sent from your UIC account. This can be accessed either through WebMail or pine on icarus.
The email address of the CS 101 Course Account is i101@cs.uic.edu
This email must contain an appropriate subject, such as: CS 101 Lab 1 Email.
The body of the email must contain the answers to the following questions:
1. What are the names of the moons of the planet Mars? Include the URL where the answer can be found.
2. Who is credited with finding the first computer bug? Include the URL where the answer can be found.
3. What is the value of Pi to the 20th decimal place? Include the URL where the answer can be found.
4. Accoding to the wikipedia, when was the Python programming language first created? Include the URL where the answer can be found.
Do not send your email to Prof. Troy's email address or to any one of the TA's email addresses. You may wish to send a copy of your email to yourself so you know it was sent and so you can have proof that you completed the assignment.

Part 2 - Post a Message in Blackboard

In the Discussion Board Area for CS 101 in Blackboard, you will find a forum for "Lab 1 Discussion Forum".
In that forum, you are to post a message that contains
1. Your Name
2. Your Hometown (or any area you wish was your hometown)
3. A favorite joke or quotation. Please keep these in good taste and interesting enough to provide good reading for the rest of the class.
