Thesis Work: Personal Augmented Computing Environment(PACE)

• One characteristic of the new generation of Web is its "socialization", where the aggregation of individual's input is valued, and user-centric information access is emphasized. The advance in network infrastructure, such as 802.1x, 3G and high-throughput networks makes pervasive access and communication of large scale data available. At the same time, the proliferation of Web services provides unprecedented number of ways to retrieve and present information for an individual, as well as to deal with the information obtained from him/her. All these rised the motivation to my dissertation topic, which is named "Personal Augmented Computing Environment (PACE)". This ongoing project specifically targets at the research problem of promoting the effective "Weblification" of an individual's environment, and could be regarded as extending the Web from the one rendered in a brower to a broader context in daily life. Three groups of techniques are being investigated. The first one is intelligent wearable device, which provides gesture-based user-interface and computer vision, which frees the user from a desktop computer into daily living environment. The intelligent device also identify a user's context and feed this information to adaptive process. The second one is context aware information retrieval and summarization, which retrieve and present the data based on the device context and the user's goal. The third one is transmission middleware among heterogenous networks. Especially, between main backbones and the "last mile" channel such as wireless links.

  Originated from MARS, an EVL collaboration in wearable visualization systems with Sensory Motor Performance Program, Northwestern University, PACE has now joined the context-aware/lifestyles research initiative at Motorola Labs and already produced multiple filing patents. A book on this project is available from major book stores.

• TSC-I2, a micro-second precision timekeeping daemon. In use by Internet2 and featured on Dr. Dobb's Journal. (Google Summer of Code 2005 project)
• Multi-variate analysis module for personal information item auto-tagging. A python-based intelligent software agent that chooses and create tags for personal information items. In use by Chandler. (Google Summer of Code 2006 project)
